The US Army has announced plans to retain Raytheon as the primary contractor responsible for supporting the TOW Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) and its Modified ITAS (MITAS) configuration through the end of the decade. The planned agreement focuses on maintaining operational effectiveness by providing logistics support, technical assistance, spare components, information management, and field service personnel. The contract is expected to cover a one-year base period with two optional annual extensions running through 2030. Raytheon was selected through a sole-source approach because the Army considers the company uniquely qualified due to its extensive experience in developing and sustaining the ITAS platform. The support program will benefit both US military services and allied nations purchasing the system through foreign military sales. ITAS significantly enhances the effectiveness of the BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile by integrating thermal imaging, digital targeting systems, and laser rangefinding technology, allowing accurate engagements in challenging weather and low-visibility environments. The TOW missile has remained one of the world’s most reliable anti-armor weapons through continuous upgrades since its original deployment during the Vietnam War.
