Taiwan is preparing to introduce a new domestically developed reconnaissance vehicle under the Iron Cavalry Project, with 246 units planned for production between 2028 and 2033. Designed for army reconnaissance units, the vehicle will support surveillance, security patrols and counterattack operations while complementing Taiwan’s existing Humvee fleet. The Armaments Bureau is overseeing development and system integration, with the Industrial Technology Research Institute responsible for mobility technologies and the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology developing the electro-optical reconnaissance system. The four-wheel-drive platform is powered by a 205-horsepower engine, providing a maximum speed of 100 km/h and an operating range of approximately 500 km. A telescopic mast-mounted electro-optical sensor can conduct reconnaissance at distances of up to 12 km. The vehicle will also feature a remotely operated 12.7 mm weapon station for self-protection and fire support. The program forms part of Taiwan’s wider efforts to strengthen military readiness and maintain operational resilience during a potential prolonged conflict.
